Small Kitchen
A small kitchen typically ranges from 6 to 10 square metres. These kitchens are designed to maximise limited space and are commonly found in apartments, tiny homes, or compact living spaces. They often have a single-wall or galley layout with limited countertop and storage space.
Medium Sized Kitchen
Medium kitchens generally range from 10 to 20 square metres and are commonly found in standard family homes. These kitchens offer a good balance of countertop space, storage, and appliances. They often have L-shaped, U-shaped, or even island layouts, making them functional for daily cooking while still allowing for some entertaining.
Large Kitchen
A large kitchen typically exceeds 20 square metres. These kitchens offer plenty of space for cooking, entertaining, and even dining. They usually have more elaborate layouts, such as island or open-plan designs, and may feature additional appliances like double ovens, larger refrigerators, or separate pantries. Large kitchens often have the luxury of extra counter space or a scullery.
These materials vary in cost, durability, and appearance, so it’s important to choose based on the look you want and how much wear and tear the kitchen will face.
Melamine
A durable, budget-friendly material made from pressed wood covered with a paper layer that's saturated in melamine resin. It's resistant to heat, moisture, and stains, making it a popular choice for cabinetry. However, melamine can chip or crack if not handled carefully.
Acrylic
A high-gloss, modern-looking surface that’s scratch-resistant and easy to clean. It provides a sleek finish, but it can be more expensive than other materials. Acrylic cabinets are known for their vibrant colour and mirror-like finish.
Panel Form
This refers to engineered wood products (like MDF or particle board) that are often covered with laminates, or paints. These panels are moulded with various grooves and styles to suit classic or contemporary kitchens.
Veneer
Thin layers of real wood applied over a core material, giving the look of solid wood at a lower cost. Veneered cabinets offer a natural wood appearance while using less wood. Timber veneer is then stained or lacquered to protect the finish.
Lacquered
Lacquer is a paint-like finish that gives cabinets a smooth, glossy surface. It can be applied in many colours and provides a premium look. While lacquer is durable, it can chip or scratch over time if not maintained properly.
Each of these materials has its pros and cons, so your choice will depend on your budget, kitchen style, and how much wear and tear you expect the surface to handle.
Laminate
Made from layers of paper or fabric soaked in resin and bonded to particle board or MDF. Laminate is budget-friendly and comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns, including designs that mimic stone or wood. While it's durable and easy to clean, it can be prone to scratching or chipping and is sensitive to heat.
Basic Range Stone
Typically refers to entry-level engineered stone benchtops, often made from quartz or composite materials. These surfaces are durable, non-porous, and resistant to scratches and stains. Basic stone options are more affordable than natural stone while still offering a sleek, modern look.
Medium Range Stone
These stone benchtops are a step up in quality, often featuring higher-end engineered quartz or composite options with more variety in colour, texture, and design. The durability is similar to basic stone, but you get more choices in terms of aesthetics, with patterns that mimic natural stone more closely.
High Range Stone
This range includes premium natural stones like marble, granite, or higher-end engineered quartz. High-range stone benchtops offer a luxurious look with unique, natural patterns, but they come at a higher price point. Natural stone is durable but can require more maintenance, especially if porous, as it may need regular sealing.
Timber
Wooden benchtops provide a warm, natural feel and can be made from a variety of hardwoods. Timber requires regular maintenance to protect it from moisture and scratches. It's a softer material compared to stone, but the look of real wood can be quite striking, especially in rustic or country-style kitchens.
Stainless Steel
Commonly used in commercial kitchens, stainless steel benchtops are durable, heat-resistant, and easy to clean. They’re perfect for modern or industrial-style kitchens. The downside is that they can scratch easily and show fingerprints or smudges.
The choice between basic, medium, and high quantity depends on how much storage you need and your budget. High quantity offers the best organisation but at a higher cost, while basic is ideal for more minimal storage needs.
